About this Site
(A Technical Brief)

Overview

The UCSB English Department created its Web site to enable interaction with its various communities of faculty, students, alumni, staff, and others, and to facilitate a timely and collaborative method of site maintenance. Much of the standard or routinely changing information on the site (e.g., course descriptions, faculty biographies, dept. news) is held in a database. The database is "live" on the Web, meaning both that the latest information is displayed dynamically and that the staff and faculty maintain the database interactively through Web forms without needing to know HTML. The site as a whole is maintained with the aid of Web-authoring programs that assist in managing total-site revisions. The English Department site runs on a server owned by the department.
