Introduction to Literary Study :  Artistry and Media

Winter 2007

Meets on: TR 9:00 AM - 10:40 AM 
Prerequisites: Writing 2 or equivalent  
Satisfies second half of GE requirement for area A
One of the following is required for the major and recommended for the minor: English 10, English 10AC, English 10EM, or English 10LC.
This course addresses such issues as the role of the artist in reception and circulation, the cultural stakes of the artist figure, and notions of "oustider" or "fringe" artists. We will analyze texts from a wide range of media, genres, and historical periods, including but not limited to selections of early modern and Modernist poetry, Mary Shelley's _Frankenstein_, Gloria Naylor's _Mama Day_, George Bernard Shaw's _Pygmalion_, selections from Ovid's _Metamorphoses_, and selections from the EMC Pepys Ballad Archive, among other "new media."
