This course addresses such issues as the role of the artist in reception and circulation, the cultural stakes of the artist figure, and notions of "oustider" or "fringe" artists. We will analyze texts from a wide range of media, genres, and historical periods, including but not limited to selections of early modern and Modernist poetry, Mary Shelley's _Frankenstein_, Gloria Naylor's _Mama Day_, George Bernard Shaw's _Pygmalion_, selections from Ovid's _Metamorphoses_, and selections from the EMC Pepys Ballad Archive, among other "new media." |
