Representations of Nature: Wordsworth, Dickinson, Bishop
This class examines representations of the natural world in works by these three poets and asks about the relation of nature and natural phenomena to their literary work. Guiding questions: how does each writer respond to the idea of a nature / culture dichotomy? How are nature and naturalness coded in their writing? How does each engage with existing generic conventions for representing nature, whether these are drawn from polite literature or other systems of representation (mapping, tourism, scientific description)? While we will consider the historical and cultural contexts in which the poets wrote and will read several critical essays, our primary focus will be on the poems themselves.
Texts Include:
Selected Poems and Prefaces by Wordsworth
The Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson
The Complete Poems (of Elizabeth Bishop) |
