Information from the English Department for Its Students about the Sept. 24th

As a consequence of actions taken by the University of California in response to the state of California's budget crisis, some faculty on their own responsibility may be participating in a "walkout" on September 24th that has been called by some faculty, staff, and students across the University of California's campuses. The Department of English staff will not be able to tell you which classes will or will not be meeting on the 24th.

To minimize confusion for students in its courses, the department has asked faculty to follow the below policy where possible:

1: Individual faculty planning to walk out have the responsibility for making arrangements, sometimes in coordination with their teaching assistants, to handle enrollment, distribution of materials (or alternative arrangements), and communication with students hoping to crash the course. The department has asked faculty to post written information in the classroom on the 24th (with or without anticipatory email communication with enrolled students). Students should check their email for messages from their instructors.

2: Failing any notice otherwise from instructors, students should come to class the first day as well as the second day. In cases where the instructor is not there on the first day to manage enrollment, enrollment will be handled by the instructor beginning with the second class on an accelerated schedule so that the final commitment to students hoping to crash the course is finished by the third class. Students not attending the first day, no matter the reason, should email their instructors.

For background information about the effect of the state budget crisis on the University of California, the UCSB campus, and the UCSB College of Letters & Science, see the open letter to undergraduates from the UCSB Deans of Humanities & Fine Arts, Social Sciences, Science, and Undergraduate Education at: http://www.college.ucsb.edu/about/features/127-open-letter-to-las-undergraduates-fall-2009.
