She shut the door behind her quickly, jolting snow from the eaves into clumps on her shoulders and black boot toes. Through the wooden door, through the red wool wrapped around her ears, the girl could hear her mother's thick breath. Tightening her grip on the basket, she started running as fast as she could into the woods. If she could get to her grandmother's house before nightfall, then she could bring back the medicine in the morning before the illness got worse.
