David Simpson and Kathleen Woodward will serve as external consultants in a planning meeting for the Public Humanities Initiative. The floor will be open for discussion (both practical and philosophical) about the proper goals of such an event series, innovative formats and events, ways to involve different communities of the "public," precedents at other institutions, etc. The meeting is open to the public.

The first event in the UCSB English Department's Public Humanities Initiative marks an inaugural phase of the project in which leading scholars who have thought about the relation between the humanities and society serve as consultants on planning an innovative public humanities agenda. Professors David Simpson and Kathleen Woodward are the inaugural speakers and consultants. (Professor John Guillory will follow in Oct. 2000.) After this initial planning stage, the Public Humanities Initiative will feature a variety of events and formats designed to bridge between the academy and the public.
