The medieval period has become synonymous with barbaric violence and torture—not only as portrayed on stage and in literature but also as part of the everyday medieval experience. In this class, we put this violent assumption to the test by studying portrayals of medieval violence in theatre and literature. We will supplement the discussions with imagery from medieval art and first-hand descriptions of medieval life.
