Bethany Wong's research focuses on gender, theater, and the novel. She studies how eighteenth-century authors, in response to anxieties about female dissembling during the rise of the professional actress in Britain, forged a gendered virtue that could be compatible with performance and theater. Analyzing works by Samuel Richardson, Frances Burney, Maria Edgeworth, Jane Austen, and others, she examines why and how authors utilized their contemporary theatrical moment to find a vocabulary for generic, gendered, and authorial selfhood.
