PAPERS:
The papers should represent your best work: well thought-out, clearly and effectively written, and respectably insightful. You are encouraged to discuss your thoughts about your papers with me before you begin writing. I will hold extra office hours before the papers are due, but I cannot discuss papers over the phone; however, you can always call to make an appointment with me. No extensions will be granted, and late papers will be penalized one-third of a grade per day past the due date.

SECTION ETHOS:
The purpose of discussion sections is to give you, the student, a chance to discuss the texts and ask questions - this is the primary way you will learn the course material. Please come to class having read and thought about the material, and be prepared to participate in discussions and activities. Polished erudition is not required for discussion; "rough draft" ideas and differing opinions are encouraged!

ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION:
Because we consider discussion to be an integral part of your learning, regular section attendance and participation are required for the course and count for 10% of your final grade. More than two absences from section will result in a substantially lower grade overall.

AVOIDING ACADEMIC DISHONESTY:
Plagiarism ("passing off another person's work as one's own," including other students' papers) will result in a failing grade for the course and furthest possible punishment under university regulations. Please acknowledge all secondary sources that you use in standard MLA format. If you are ever in doubt about whether to acknowledge a source, please ask!

ADDITIONAL STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES:
All work must be completed in order to pass the course. Students are responsible for any material missed due to absence from class. This includes handouts distributed, announcements made, assignments due, etc. Please, always bring your text and reader to class.
