Attendance and Participation
Regular attendance and active participation are mandatory. Come to class prepared to participate, to share your thoughts and questions. Of course, you should not miss any discussion section. You are allowed only one "unexcused" absence in the quarter. In the event of an unavoidable absence (from section or lecture), you are responsible for whatever material you missed, including handouts, assignments, announcements, etc. Please get notes, announcements, etc. from a classmate. If you have questions after you have acquired notes from a classmate and talked with him!her, I am happy to discuss them with you in my office hours.

Papers
This course will require a lot of writing from you. There are five short papers (two to three pages) and a final exam. Papers should be double-spaced, typed, and in a 12-point font. They should, of course, be proof read for grammar and spelling errors. Please do not use coyer pages (they are a waste of paper).
Papers must be turned in at the beginning of lecture on the day that they are due. Late papers will be docked one full grade. Papers a week or more late will be docked two full grades. You must do all five papers (and the final exam) in order to pass the course.

Office Hours and Messages
I encourage you to come to my office hours if you want to discuss your papers or the reading. If you cannot make it to my office hour, I am more than willing to make an appointment to meet with you. If you need to get in touch with me, feel free to leave a message in my mailbox in the Sankey Room (SH 2623) or to send me an e-mail message (%yinston@humanitas.ucsb.edu). If there is an emergency, you may call me at home (before 9pm). My home phone is 963-9621.

Course Content and Educational Resources
I am aware that Renaissance English can be difficult and that the first few weeks may be frustrating. Reading carefully, noting the plot and important passages, and re-reading the plays should help.
As you think about these plays, I can be a resource to help you to refine your thinking. Also, there are anthologies of Shakespeare criticism on reserve which may help you. Of course, if you use any ideas from, these anthologies in your papers, you must cite them (failure to do so is plagiarism). As you write your papers, I encourage you to discuss your ideas with your classmates and friends and to read yourpapers to them. In addition, there are writing resources available to you at Campus Learning Assistance Services (CLAS).

Grading
All papers and the final exam must be completed in order to pass the class.
Papers 1 and 2 (10% each), papers 3-5 (15% each), section participation and attendance (10%), Final--which will draw heavily on material from the lectures (25%).

Final Exam: Thursday, March 21, 8-1 lam
