Section:
Section is your chance to let the rest of the world (within our small confine) know how you feel and what you think about the works we are reading and watching. It’s a chance to share excitement, delight, disgust, brilliance, and confusion, to disagree and to learn from each other. I anticipate that the focus of this section will be discussion and not lecture, so its quality depends upon your willingness to participate. Be sure to bring the relevant texts every week so you’re armed for battle. Attendance is mandatory and more than two absences may result in your being dropped from the course. The quality and quantity of your participation will also be reflected in your final grade.

Contact Papers and Class Participation:
To encourage class participation and to give me a gauge on your understandings of the works we are studying as we progress into the quarter, I will expect you to turn in 5 one page single spaced responses. I expect contact papers to reflect your thoughts about the works we are covering critically as well as personally. Write about what interests you. Papers should be turned into me during section. Response papers will be graded as excellent, satisfactory, or unsatisfactory. Excellent papers will receive full credit, satisfactory papers will be considered B range, and unsatisfactory papers will need to be rewritten for a grade. An excellent paper will show an exceptional and highly nuanced critical engagement with the week’s material. A satisfactory paper will show some critical engagement, but may not be as original or well-developed as an excellent paper. An unsatisfactory paper will neglect to present an analytical approach to the day’s reading. Creative response papers should relate to the week’s reading thematically. If you elect to turn in more than 5 we can arrange to drop the lowest grade/s. Every week 2-3 people will be asked to read their papers and begin section discussion. This is a required component of class participation.

The Internet:
I will be periodically addressing you all over e-mail. Each week I will send out a list of questions and ideas raised by our texts. I also encourage you all to use this forum to continue discussion outside of section, to pose questions, raise concerns, or point out particularly interesting topics. Participation in this format will be considered class participation.

Papers:
As your papers come due I will hand out a set of guidelines regarding paper structure. I will also add additional office hours at that time.
