A Basic Guide to Omnipage
and Adobe Photoshop
Scanning Applications
Omnipage
TEXT
DOCUMENTS
- Select
“manual” placement.
- Place document
on scanner. Align to upper left corner.
- Select “Get Page”
button.
- Paragraph boxes
can be removed by selecting the “plus” icon from menu bar
to left of scanned document. After selecting, click at upper
left corner of page; hold mouse button and drag to include
all text on page. Save. The document should now appear as a regular
Word document.
- Perform proofreading
by selecting the “OCR” button.
- Select “Save As File” option. Most likely you will
want to save as a "MS Word" document.
- If you are working
on an English Department computer that is networked, and
you are logged in to the computer as yourself, you can save
the document in your local folder (and therefore retrieve
it from any other networked location).
Note:Omnipage
can be used to scan images, but Adobe Photoshop will result
in better quality, and is also preferred because it is easier
to adjust the image afterward.
Adobe
Photoshop
IMAGES
-
Place image on scanner.
- Select
“File” drop down menu.
- Select
“Import.”
- Select
“Select Twain”
- Scan.
Use
default settings to scan; this will result in a rather large
image, but you can reduce it quite easily, and it’s
preferable to go from large to small than the reverse, which
will severely degrade image quality.
- Cropping:
After scanning is complete, you can use the cropping tool
from menu palette. After outlining the area you wish to
include, go to “Image” on drop down menu and
select “crop.”If you are using Photoshop 5.5,
the canvas should immediately snap to the contours of your
cropped image. If there is excess white around the image
after cropping, you are probably using Photoshop version
5. If this is the case, you can use the “magic wand”
(side menu palette, second option from top right) to mark
it off the excess canvas, then go to “Image”
on upper bar and select “Canvas Trim.”
- Resize
to SOLTR size/resolution standard: go to “Image”
and select “Image Size.”
- SOLTR
standard configuration size is 6 inches; resolution 72 pixels/inch.
- Save
as JPEG.
- SOLTR
standard for naming: image names should be in lower case
letters, with no spaces between words (you can use underscore
marks to separate words if desired).
Note
that the Adobe “Help” library is actually quite
helpful.
If the instructions on this page fail you, give the Help
option a try!
