Graduate Program Rankings
Researching Graduate Programs in English

The following is a list of the top grad programs in the country that offer a Ph.D. in English Literature. These rankings were done in 2001 by US News and World Report. Please note that other services, such as Peterson's, will have different rankings than those provided here and you should go to the library to do a more thorough search on schools that you are interested in attending. The categories are then broken down into more specific temporal and geographic fields (i.e. 18th to 20th c. British Literature).

Note: While most schools like to see that you have a particular area or focus when you apply (and you should apply to schools that have a noted strength in your area of interest), you also want to apply to programs that are strong overall as well. All of these programs have substantial information about their departments and specific requirements on the web. If you click on the name of the school you are interested in, you will be taken to that school's home page. For general information about applying to graduate school go to our Researching Graduate School site.

If you want more information about that school's grad programs in general, go to the "Graduate Information" links. If you are looking to apply online or have an application sent to you, go to the "Prospective Students" link offered on most of the homepages. Make sure to check out your department's homepage as well to get a better sense of where that particular program is heading. Several programs encourage you to submit part of your application online, or to download (using .pdf format) the application from their website.
