"What
English classes should I take?"
The first step in planning
your course work should be to consult The
Department of English Undergraduate Handbook.
Then visit the Undergraduate
Advisor in order to develop a
personalized plan that works for you.
|
"I
need help! Who can I talk to???"
The Undergraduate
Program Advisor is here to answer
all of your questions about the English
major and minor. Follow the links for each
to find out which advisor to talk to and
where you can find her. |
"I
want to take Creative Writing."
To register in a writing
of fiction or poetry course, you need the
approval of the instructor. Instructors
will review each student's writing sample
(preferably before registration in the class)
and then provide add codes to those students
who meet their criteria. See the Schedule
of Classes for creative writing course offerings.
|
"GOLD
won't let me enroll in the class!"
Some classes are restricted
to English, Creative Studies, and Comparative
Literature majors for the first pass of
registration. Non majors and English minors
may be able to enroll through GOLD during
the second and third passes on a space-available
basis. Also, to enroll in an upper-division
English course, you will need to have completed
Writing 2, 50, or 109AA-ZZ, English 10,
or have upper-division standing.
|
"Is
section mandatory?"
Yes! For large lectures
with discussion sections, attendance in
a section is also required. You enroll in
the section! Students who do not attend
the first two discussion sections, even
when the first section falls before the
scheduled lectures, may be dropped from
the class. Absences later in the quarter
will affect your course grade; talk to your
TA to find out her policy on attendence.
See the Department
Directory for information on how to
contact your TA.
|
"How
do I get into a class thats full? Is crashing
allowed?"
If you cannot enroll in
a class through GOLD, try to enroll by attending
the first meeting of the class, where you
may be able to obtain a Course Approval
Code. These codes are available only from
the instructor during the first weeks of
class, not from the English office.
|
"When
should I declare?"
You may declare at any
time (but certainly before you are a senior!).
However, you do need to complete your Area
A (GE) requirements before enrolling in
an upper-division English class. Download
an English Major requirements sheet (PDF
version) on the Office
of the Registrar site. Once there, click
on Student Records and then follow the link
to College of Letters and Science Major
and Minor sheets. You may also pick one
up an English Major requirements sheet in
the English Department office.
|
"Can
I minor in English? How?"
Yes! Download the English
Minor requirements sheet from the Office
of the Registrar website. Once there,
click on Student Records and then follow
the link to College of Letters and Science
Major and Minor requirements sheets. You
may also pick one up in the English Department
office. You will need to declare the minor
when you finish the required coursework
outlined on the sheet, or during the quarter
in which you are finishing your last classes.
To declare, download an English
Minor certification form or pick one
up in the English office, complete the form,
and turn it in with a self-addressed, stamped
envelope to Ann Wainwright.
Please note: diplomas
now reflect the sucessful completion of
a declared minor. |
