Beginning in Paris of 1925 with the first surrealist show in that City of Light, this course examine rural modernism in the context of the sculpted word through focusing on experimental works, which transformed the novel between the Wars. Shaped by Cubism to be interpreted by not-so-abstract, newly readable “Abstract Expressionism,” Faulkner—drawing on the visual imaginaries of Poe, the Mad Potter of Biloxi, his own mother, and others—rewrote (andredrew) the history of the novel through The Sound and the Fury, Absalom, Absalom!, As I lay
Dying, and Light in August. Other authors, in addition to Faulkner and Poe, include Ricard Wright and Eudora Welty. We will be delving into the mysteries of creation and early to mid-century experimentalism and spending time in the newly acquired holographic and typescript
facsimile collection in the Library. Designed as a Senior Seminar to introduce students too riginal, archival research and ways of seeing, Juniors with a special interest in the dynamic relations between the visual, verbal, and sonic arts are welcome.
