Our monsters (aliens, vampires, cyborgs, hermaphrodites …) can tell us a lot about ourselves. This class examines how ideas of what’s monstrous have been constructed since the early modern period. Readings include short stories (including Chopin, Hawthorne, Hoffmann, Nabokov, Swift), critical essays by historians and science-studies specialists, two plays, The Tempest and The Elephant Man, Frankenstein, an “X-files” episode and other material.
