We will examine representative works of science fiction in short stories, novels, television, and films, beginning with nineteenth-century prototypes and continuing with an exploration of its major themes and genres in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Major authors include the following: H.G. Wells, Ursula Le Guin, Octavia Butler, Arthur C. Clarke, James Tiptree, Cordwainer Smith, William Gibson, P.D. James, and Philip K. Dick.
