English 11: Uses of Literature: Journalism

This course will offer both practical training in how to be a journalist and an exploration of the history of journalism–and where it is going today. While gaining hands-on skills in interviewing, reporting, writing and structuring stories, pitching article ideas, and web journalism, students will engage with readings from eighteenth-century newspapers to twentieth-century “New Journalism” to the present moment’s battles over “fake news.” Along the way, we will investigate the relationship between journalism and literature in connection to crucial concepts such as objectivity, freedom of speech, and “the truth.”
