This course introduces students to the ocean humanities. This branch of the environmental humanities will examine literature, media, and theory specific to the global ocean from a range of cultural perspectives and contexts. It will also examine how knowledge formation in the sciences generates particular stories and narratives about the ocean, particularly in documentary film and conservation. The course will closely study the imagination and construction of oceanic perspectives (human, animal, machine) in relation to questions of objectivity, power, empire, race, class, and gender. Ideal for students interested in science communication, creative nonfiction, environmental justice, or environmental philosophy.
