Sa’dia Rehman is a multidisciplinary artist and educator who explores how contemporary and historical images communicate, consolidate and contest ideas about race, empire and labor. Through techniques such as wall drawing, cut outs and assemblage, Rehman pulls apart and puts together images from family photographs, historical records, and mass media to interrogate their resonances. Rehman is the 2020-21 Social Justice Visual Art Fellow at the Columbus Museum where she is researching the social realist collection and will be creating a site-reactive wall drawing titled ‘The Land of Promise.’ She has exhibited work at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Kentler International Drawing Space, The Kitchen, Center for Book Arts, Queens Museum, Brooklyn Museum and Pakistan National Council of the Arts. She was a nominee for the 2017 Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant, a recipient of the Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson Grant, the Meredith Morabito and Henrietta Mantooth Fellowship and the Ann Hamilton Travel Grant. She is a 2020-21 AIR at Abrons Art Center and Asian American Arts Alliance Resident. She has been awarded residencies at Edward Albee Foundation, Vermont Studio Center, NARS Foundation, ASI/LMCC & Creative Capital and AIM Bronx Museum. Her work has been featured in the NYTimes, Harper’s, Art Papers and ColorLines. She holds an MFA from Ohio State University, an MA from City College of NY and a BA from College of New Rochelle. Rehman was born and raised in NYC and NJ and is currently based in Columbus, Ohio.

The English Department’s American Cultures and Global Contexts Center (ACGCC), in collaboration with Las Maestras Center, The Carsey-Wolf Center, The Interdisciplinary Humanities Center, the Art Design and Architecture Museum, the Department of Global Studies, Hemispheric South/s Research Initiative, and the Feminist Futures Initiative have invited artist Sa’dia Rehman to address the UC Santa Barbara community through an artist talk and virtual studio visit that will take place on April 15, 2021.

We are also looking to support the artist’s work by commissioning a piece emerging out of UC Santa Barbara’s unique vision of education and history of place. The studio visit will provide a glimpse into the creative process of this artwork in the making. Alongside the stewardship and curation of the piece once it is finished, we envision multiple possibilities for pedagogy around the art object: the research behind its ideation, the process of its production, and the meanings and relevance of its reception by our community. Our commitment to the material artistic object stems from the hope that we will soon be able to physically gather around it, giving our community a space and an opportunity to reflect on art, activism, and scholarly inquiry as sites of reunion, encounter, solidarity, and healing.
