New Major
In order to better reflect the exciting courses and diverse voices in the English department, we have revised the requirements for the English major. The new requirements will go into effect in Fall 2023.

Current Major
If you are already an English major (declared prior to Fall 2023), you can simply keep following the pre-2023 guidelines
Here is a link to the pre-2023 major sheet
You may need to make a few simple adjustments, but notice that these adjustments will actually give you greater flexibility in completing your degree
- Replace English 101 with any course that falls in the English 101AA-ZZ rubric, or any of the courses that fulfill the new pre-1500 requirement (*This is only relevant if you have not already taken English 101)
- Replace English 102 with any course that falls in the English 102AA-ZZ rubric, or any of the courses that fulfill the new 1500-1700 requirement (*This is only relevant if you have not already taken English 102)
In Fall 2023, for instance, you could take ENG 102BA: Royalists, Radicals, and the Transformation of the Anglophone World
- Replace English 103A or B with any course that falls in the English 103AA-ZZ rubric, or any of the courses that fulfill the new 1700-1900 requirement (*This is only relevant if you have not already taken English 103 A or B)
In Fall 2023, you might take ENG 103WT: Wilde Times: Late Victorian Literature and Aesthetics
- Replace English 104A or B with any course that falls in the English 104AA-ZZ rubric, or any of the courses that fulfill the new post-1900 requirement (* This is only relevant if you have not already taken English 104A or B)
In Fall 2023, you might take English 104AL: American Literature from 1900 to the Present
